The Dirt Run

The Afghanistan Annex Dirt Run
Big Sur's 4th annual Mud Run became an international event with the concurrent running of the Dirt Run for the "Afghanistan Annex" in Camp Pol-e-sharki on the eastern side of the Kabul city limits.  Because of the time zone difference the Dirt Run was completed by more than two dozen troops on a four mile course over rocky dirt roads that included one ravine.  A rainy morning helped turn the dirt to mud in some places.

The connection between the two events is one individual, Sergeant Major Pete dela Rosa, who was a key military volunteer for the first two years of the Big Sur Mud Run when he was stationed at the Presidio of Monterey. Knowing the fun and camaraderie of the event, he contacted the Big Sur Race organizer, Wally Kastner, a retired Marine Infantry Officer to discuss the idea. The Big Sur Mud Run jumped at the opportunity to support the troops overseas and printed Mud Run “Afghanistan Annex” t-shirts and sent Mud Run finishers’ medals to Afghanistan.
